Fruit Fly Exclusion Netting is recommended for insect exclusion, fruitfly protection, crop protection, bird exclusion, garden netting, reduction of evaporation and transpiration, microclimate adjustments, shade and reduction of sunburn. The exclusion netting will provide some shade (ideal for small seedlings) and will reduce evaporation, which is ideal for starting off small seedlings. Not only will it exclude insects, it can also exclude snails and large slugs.
Fruit Fly Exclusion Netting material is stretchy and requires a supporting structure. An article from organicgardener.com.au states that ‘The most reliable, in my experience, is exclusion. If you haven’t yet come across the term, the technique uses a physical barrier to prevent the female flies from laying their eggs through the skin of the protected fruit…..trick with exclusion is to get the timing right. Flies are generally active from late winter, and build up in numbers during late summer and autumn. As a rule, it’s best to get exclusion bags or nets on as soon as possible after fruitlets are large enough to be handled without falling off the tree.’
